jethro haynes

Jethro Haynes has a fascination for sea life and uses the underwater world as a starting point for his incredible creativity. A famous illustrator, his doodles and scribbles lead into a passionate final work. As an artist he is a true craftsman, his studio a hive of sculpture, paintings and a ceaseless creative output.
This has led him to some great work throughout the last three years and interest from a wide range of different clients. He has worked closely with popular street-wear brand Pointer footwear, producing sculptures to profile certain parts of the range, prints for the actual shoes and t-shirts for promotion. This is just one example of the artist - a diverse talent, happy in any medium. He is now widely accepted as a hot new talent on the scene, and as a result Jethro’s work has featured widely in Grafik, Dazed & Confused and Illustrated Ape.
On first approaching Jethro to produce a design for JOI, his immediate response was one of sheer passion. He took to the idea immediately and his designs prove that he can translate his work to any canvas that is put in front of him. With his JOI work, his repeating design throughout the panels revealed a kaleidoscopic pattern harking back to ‘60s psychedelia as well as pointing, as always, to his love of the underwater abyss.
“He’s one of those rare creatures: a distinctive and singular talent, passionate about making things with his bare hands and having bags of fun in the process.”
Grafik, July 2007

stefan marx

Books of all kinds excite the man from Hamburg who is known for designs that reflect a childish humour and love of small characters and randomly combined environments. But underlying the comedy and child like hand, is the weight of Stefan Marx’s talent. Look closer and you begin to understand his interest in people, the streets around him and the influences he has come across through his skateboarding and constant sketching and creativity.

Combining sculpture and illustration, Stefan has built up a strong following for his work through his regular exhibitions across Europe, namely ‘the Side Effects Of Urethane’ that offered the perfect balance between his love of skateboarding and his artwork. Also featuring in titles such as ‘The Art Of Rebellion’ and ‘Street Logos’, Stefan’s thinking/working/living/drawing 24 hours a day attitude has brought him many collaborations with brands such as Cleptomanicx and Copenhagen’s Alis skateboards. Publishing regular fanzines featuring recent work, interests and topics, Stefan maintains an intelligent path in life, sharing his thoughts with a satirical humour on modern living.

This is reflected when Stefan put his approach to the JOI umbrella, as he took to the moon and joined camels, pyramids and pharaohs of ancient Egypt to make a playful and unique design
“I take my inspiration straight out of my life, my environment, music, thoughts, friends/fiends and reading. My style? Hmm, dunno, my good friend Benjamin Deberdt used the term “quirkly” when he spoke about my drawings, and I’m happy with that.”
